En visite au Liban alors qu’il devrait prochainement quitter ses fonctions, le sous secrétaire d’état américain en charge du Moyen Orient David Hale a rencontré successivement plusieurs dirigeants libanais dont le ministre sortant des affaires étrangères Charbel Wehbé, le président de la chambre des députés Nabih Berri et le premier ministre désigné Saad Hariri pour aborder la crise politique actuelle. Il a ainsi communiqué à ces derniers les inquiétudes américaines face à la détérioration des conditions sociales et économiques locales, les appelant à de la flexibilité dans leurs exigences. Il est également attendu par le Président de la République, le général Michel Aoun au Palais de Baabda.

Ceci est une accumulation de décennies de mauvaise gestion, de corruption et d’incapacité des dirigeants libanais à mettre en avant l’intérêt de leur pays, a estimé David Hall à l’issue d’un entretien avec Nabih Berri, rappelant que la communauté internationale et les Etats-Unis sont prêts à aider si un partenaire local – allusion à l’absence de gouvernement – existait. Il a également appelé à la mise en place de réformes économiques qui devraient être transparentes et mises en oeuvres.

He also reiterated that Lebanon could do without a state of default, thus denying the gravity of the economic crisis however experienced by the population, with 55% of it now living below the poverty line while the economic recession has reached 29% according to some reports for the year 2020.

However, Saad Hariri’s proposals for an 18-member cabinet clash with the Presidency of the Republic, who points out that if the Shiite and Sunni communities choose their representatives, the Christian representatives in the new cabinet would also be chosen by the former. designated minister. General Aoun de facto considers that the current proposals of the Prime Minister contravene both the Lebanese constitution and the national pact.

The latter, for his part, accuses the head of state of wanting to obtain a blocking third party within his new cabinet.
