The prince Philip Mountbatten, Duke of Edinburgh and husband of Queen Elizabeth II of England died this morning at the age of 99, reports the British Royal Palace.

He was most recently hospitalized with an infection and then underwent heart surgery, before being discharged from hospital to be reunited with his wife Elizabeth II at Windsor Castle last month.

Prince Philip was born in Corfu, Greece on June 10, 1921 with the titles of Prince of Greece and Denmark. He is the great-great-grandsons of Queen Victoria like his wife.
The King of Greece, Philippe’s uncle, was forced to abdicate a few months later. His family had then fled to Paris, along with Philip, in a cradle made from an orange box aboard a British warship.

He then lived in England for a while, including schooling at Gordonstoun College, a boarding school in Scotland.

Joining the Royal Navy at the age of 18, he witnessed the surrender of Japan.

Prince Philip had met the future Queen Elizabeth in 1934, from then on maintaining a correspondence and he would marry her on November 11, 1947. He will then renounce his Greek royal title and become a British citizen. Elizabeth’s father, King George VI, will name him as the Duke of Edinburgh.

At the coronation of Queen Elizabeth, he will become her husband, giving up his military career.
