The director of monetary operations of the Banque du Liban Mazen Hamdan was arrested in May 2020 by the judicial authorities along with officials of the brokerage union who then accused the governor of the Banque du Liban of complicity. Mazen Hamdan was then accused of having carried out operations on behalf of the BDL withdrawing dollars from the market. instead of injecting it to try to lower the pressure on the Lebanese Pound. The magistrate had already asked, on several occasions since, to hear the governor of the Banque du Liban Riad Salamé himself in the context of this case, which he refused.
A case that takes a political turn
The governor of the Banque du Liban, considered a relative of the Hariri family since he arrived at the head of the Central Bank at the same time as the accession to the post of Prime Minister of Rafic Hariri, father of Saad Hariri, in 1993, is widely criticized for the financial engineering operations carried out in recent years and which would have worsened the current financial crisis. He is also accused by the Swiss justice for embezzlement of public funds. It has also announced the freezing of its assets.
It would also investigate several sensitive files implicating a former Prime Minister Nagib Mikati, former ministers or the governor of the Bank of Lebanon Riad Salamé, also a close friend of Saad Hariri.
