The drug shipment behind the Saudi decision to ban the import of fruits and vegetables from Lebanon was not placed in Lebanon but in Syria, sources told MTV Lebanon.
According to them, the importation of pomegranates into Lebanon would have been carried out with the help of a fake company, the certificate of origin having been forged, as well as the certificates showing a Lebanese origin to this merchandise.
These pomegranates would thus have arrived in Lebanon with the captagon pills already present in each fruit.
This information comes as some sources have already questioned the real origin of these fruits, while the pomegranate season has not yet started in Lebanon.
The ban comes as Lebanon exports $ 24 million worth of fruit and vegetables to Saudi Arabia alone and $ 40 million in all to the Arabian Peninsula.
The Arabian Peninsula region accounts for 96% of Lebanese agricultural product exports.
The news comes as the Lebanese authorities have announced an intensification of efforts to combat drug trafficking.
At the end of the meeting of the High Security Council, the President of the Republic, General Michel Aoun, declared himself determined to maintain the best relations with the Arab countries.
The head of state also addressed the issue of other trafficking, such as fuel or subsidized products which are expensive in Lebanon. He wondered about the delays taken for the purchase of scanners to be placed at the border crossings in accordance with a decision taken in July 2020 and the publication of the decree being linked.
For his part, outgoing Prime Minister Hassan Diab also spoke of the repercussions of the Saudi decision indicating that local authorities wish to have the best relations with the kingdom.
