Who is Charbel Wehbé, the Minister of Foreign Affairs


Successor of Nassif Hitti who announced his resignation on Monday August 3, 2020, Charbel Wehbé was born in the village of Akoura on July 15, 1953. He obtained a bachelor’s degree in mathematics from the Faculty of Sciences of the Lebanese University in 1974 and then a license in Lebanese law from the Faculty of Law of the Lebanese University in 1979.

Charbel Wehbé will begin a 42-year career in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, which will take him to various positions in Cairo, The Hague, Berlin before he becomes Consul General of Lebanon in Toronto, Canada between 1995 and 2000.

He was then Consul of Lebanon in Los Angeles in the United States between 2002 and 2007 then Ambassador of Lebanon in Venezuela between 2007 and 2012.

Charbel Wehbé will then return to Lebanon and will occupy the post of Secretary General of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Emigrants between February and July 2017 before being appointed as adviser in charge of Foreign Affairs by the Presidency of the Republic from October of that same year.

Charbel Wehbé was therefore appointed Minister of Foreign Affairs on August 3, 2020 and joined the Hassan Diab government following the resignation of Nassif Hitti.

The new minister is fluent in French, English and Arabic.

Married to Rahim Wehbé, Charbel Wehbé is the father of 3 children, Pierre, Marc and Richard.

In addition, he holds the Order of Francisco de Miranda, first class, from the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela.
