The presidency of the republic responded with a statement in response to information conveyed by certain media, accusing Baabda of refusing to sign certain decrees.

The Baabda Palace thus indicates that at the end of each year, it is up to the Council of Ministers to extend the contract of contractual workers working in the public service.

Due to the current paralysis of the government, these procedures could not be carried out at the end of 2021.

In addition, the President of the Republic called for the meeting of the Council of Ministers because of the urgency of the situation, to which the Prime Minister would not have responded for the time being while asking the presidency of the republic to sign exceptional decrees relating to the increase in the value of transport allowances to the public and private sector, the granting of social assistance to civil servants for the months of October, November and December, and to the ministry of health to cover certain costs.

However, the Presidency of the Republic considers that it cannot proceed, the government not having resigned and that only a meeting of the Council of Ministers is able to implement these decisions.

Thus, those responsible for the current paralysis of the government should be held responsible, notes the presidency of the republic.

As a reminder, no meeting of the Council of Ministers has been able to take place since early November 2021, following the boycott decided by the ministers of the Amal movement and Hezbollah after the magistrate in charge of the investigation into the port of Beirut decided to indict several former ministers close to the president of the chamber Nabih Berri and issued an arrest warrant against his right-hand man, the former finance minister, Ali Hassan Khalil. The 2 parties demand to obtain the relinquishment of the judge to return to the table of the Council of Ministers.
