A UN report notes that the economic crisis Lebanon is going through is hitting Lebanon even harder. 50% of them are currently unemployed, a majority of which since the last quarter of 2020.

These are mainly foreign workers from the Philippines, Ethiopia, Bangladesh or some African countries.

According to the UN, these people would no longer even be able to afford the cost of purchasing food.

In addition, these individuals would still be subject to abuse including sexual abuse or even today the refusal of their employers to pay them. Almost half would like to return home but could not afford the price of a return ticket. Others too could not return home because of the Kafala system which deprives them of their passports for the benefit of their employers or temp agencies that employ them.

The UN therefore calls for funding and procedures to be quickly set in motion in Lebanon to ensure their departures from Lebanon.
