The President of the Republic, General Michel Aoun, issued a press release, indicating that he had asked the parliament to amend the law aimed at obliging banks operating in Lebanon to pay the amount of 10,000 US dollars, depending on the exchange rate. official dollar, to Lebanese university students studying abroad.

The head of state estimates on the basis of article 57 of the Lebanese constitution stipulating equal rights, the text should thus oblige the Lebanese banks to pay these 10,000 USD to Lebanese students abroad and locally.

This information comes as the families of Lebanese students abroad demonstrated yesterday in front of the presidential palace in Baabda following the announcement of the head of state’s refusal to sign the current regulations.

As a reminder, Lebanese banks unilaterally established capital controls in November 2019, refusing any transfer abroad, including in favor of students. They had until now, under the pretext of a lack of regulation, to refuse to make these transfers despite court decisions obliging them to do so.
