Google to donate $2.2 million

local relief efforts and support for affected small businesses

August 17, Dubai, United Arab Emirates – Google today announced a $2.2 million donation to support the Beirut population affected by the tragic explosion that struck the capital on August 4.

The funds were raised through an employee contribution program.

The funds will be donated to local NGOs in Lebanon that provide medical care, public shelter and food donations.

Lino Cattaruzzi, Google’s chief executive in the Middle East and North Africa, said: “We are deeply saddened by the tragic explosion in Beirut. Our thoughts are with every person impacted in and out of Lebanon. Google’s donation will be donated to local NGOs and charities in Lebanon that are working the ground to help affected individuals and families. Through our Search, Maps and YouTube products, we will continue to generate donations, support local businesses and provide access to the important information people need at this difficult time.”

Google.org will also fund Youth Business International (YBI), a global support network for entrepreneurs, to provide boost support to local Lebanese businesses and entrepreneurs. “YBI’s Rapid Response” and “Recovery Program” will offer telephone support, targeted advice, training and webinars to support the most affected businesses and business owners. The program will also include mentoring by Google employees who will help business owners develop and adapt to the challenges that lie ahead.

Beirut Businesses database

The Beirut Businesses Database includes a list of companies within a 2km radius of the explosion that took place on August 4, 2020. It was compiled using data from Google Maps and the volunteer efforts of employees from Lebanon at Google.

The purpose of this database is to help NGOs assess the needs of local businesses affected by the explosion and to inform emergency humanitarian aid.
