The situation in southern Lebanon continues to deteriorate amid intense clashes between Israeli forces and Hizbullah. In the past few hours, several major events have taken place in this region already battered by fighting, while violence continues in other areas affected by Israeli strikes.
New clashes in southern Lebanon
According to recent reports, Hezbollah has repelled two attempts by the Israeli army to infiltrate southern Lebanon. The clashes also saw Israel intercept two rockets launched in the direction of Caesarea, a city south of Haifa. These incidents mark the continuation of the escalation between the two forces, as Hezbollah continues to respond to Israeli strikes on its positions and on Lebanese civilians.
An adviser to the Israeli finance minister on a tour of Israel’s northern border is even said to have been injured in the clashes.

Intensified airstrikes
Israel has intensified its attacks in the past 24 hours, targeting both Lebanon and the Gaza Strip. The IDF said it had struck more than 230 targets, including 185 Hezbollah sites in Lebanon, as well as 45 Hamas sites in the Gaza Strip. The targets included observation posts, rocket launchers and weapons depots. These strikes were followed by close combat, with several Hezbollah militants killed in southern Lebanon.
In addition, Israeli strikes hit areas in southern Beirut, including the Haret Hreik neighborhood, a Hezbollah stronghold. The town of Baalbek was also hit several times, causing the death of several civilians.
Civilian casualties and mass displacement
Lebanon’s health ministry said Israeli shelling in the southern, Nabatieh, Bekaa, Baalbek-Hermel and Mount Lebanon governorates killed 36 people and wounded 150 others. Since the beginning of hostilities, more than 2,119 people have been killed and 10,019 injured, while more than one million people have been displaced due to the relentless shelling.
In the Bekaa region, east of Baalbek, the town of Saida was targeted by Israeli strikes, killing one person and wounding several others. At the same time, in the Tyre district, several localities, including Qlaileh, Hanieh and Sarafand, were targeted by Israeli air raids, increasing the number of civilian casualties.
Regional Security Implications
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has made a new appeal to the Lebanese, urging them to « liberate their country from Hezbollah so that this war can end. » He also claimed that Israel had eliminated several senior Hezbollah figures, including its secretary general Hassan Nasrallah, although these claims have not been confirmed by independent sources.
On the international stage, pressure for a ceasefire is intensifying, especially from the United States, France and the United Kingdom, which are preparing to discuss the situation in the Middle East at a meeting scheduled for Thursday. However, US support for Israeli operations against Hezbollah remains strong, as Pentagon spokesman Patrick Ryder said, saying Israel had « the right to respond » while calling for avoiding regional escalation.
