Update on the situation at 9 a.m.: the humanitarian situation in Lebanon is deteriorating

The situation in Lebanon and the region is increasingly worrying on this October morning in 2024, as tensions continue to rise between Israel and Hezbollah, as well as between Israel and Gaza. The statements and events of the last few hours testify to the intensity of the fighting and the diplomatic prospects that seem to be receding. Here is a detailed update on the situation, based on the latest available information.

Israeli bombing and Hezbollah retaliation

This morning, several sources reported massive Israeli raids on Hezbollah positions in southern Lebanon, particularly in the regions of Nabatieh, Arabsalim, and the southern suburbs of Beirut. These attacks target both suspected military infrastructure and civilian areas, increasing casualties and property damage. The southern suburbs of Beirut, a Hezbollah stronghold, have been hit several times, particularly in the neighbourhoods of Haret Hreik, Bir Hassan, and Bourj al-Barajneh, areas already heavily hit in previous raids.

Hezbollah reacted forcefully, claiming to have launched salvos of rockets at Israeli military positions in northern Israel, including Shlomi and Hanita, near the Lebanese-Israeli border. According to the IDF spokesman, Hezbollah’s rocket batteries and missile guidance systems were targeted by precision strikes.

Escalation of regional tensions

The intensification of strikes is also marked by an increase in fronts. Not only does Israel continue its operations in Gaza, but Yemen has also become involved in the conflict with the launch of ballistic missiles towards Israel, some of which were intercepted by the Israeli air defense system.

At the diplomatic level, growing tensions are emerging between Iran and Israel. Recent reports indicate that Iran could retaliate to any Israeli attack, and this position was reiterated by an adviser to Iran’s supreme leader, who warned Israel that an « appropriate response » would follow any mistake on its part. In addition, Israeli officials continue to mull military options, although the Israeli press reports that discussions on a possible attack on Iranian nuclear sites have been postponed after a lengthy internal debate.

Deteriorating humanitarian situation

Israeli strikes in southern Lebanon have intensified, hitting several villages in the Tyre district, causing extensive damage to infrastructure. Areas such as Kafr Dunin have seen their mosques destroyed in shelling, and other cities such as Naqoura and Alma al-Shaab have been heavily bombed. The Israeli air force also struck several targets in Baalbek in the Bekaa, an area traditionally under Hezbollah control.

At the same time, the humanitarian situation in Gaza continues to deteriorate at an alarming rate. Israeli raids intensified on the Jabalia refugee camp and other civilian areas, resulting in the deaths of many civilians, including in the Bureij camp. According to local reports, about 20 people, including several children, died in strikes targeting refugee camps and residential areas in the Gaza Strip. Civilian infrastructure is devastated, and efforts to deliver humanitarian aid are hampered by the intensity of the fighting and massive destruction.

International diplomacy and the prospects for a ceasefire

On the diplomatic front, calls for a ceasefire are beginning to emerge, although differences remain. The United Kingdom, through its ambassador to Israel, called for the opening of negotiations « as soon as possible » to end hostilities in Lebanon, stressing that the Israeli government understands that the war can only end with negotiations. However, the United States, according to officials quoted by CNN, is not actively seeking to promote a ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah at this time, preferring a wait-and-see approach.

Israel, meanwhile, seems determined to continue its military operations until it achieves its goals. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said yesterday that as long as Israel’s existence is threatened, the fighting will continue. He stressed the need to continue the war against Hezbollah and prevent any strategic threat from Gaza or Lebanon.

At the same time, the Israeli media are reporting deep differences between Israel and France on how to handle the war in Gaza and Lebanon. Paris has expressed concerns about the escalation of the conflict and the risks to regional stability, concerns that do not seem to be shared by Tel Aviv, which remains focused on its military objectives.

Hezbollah’s Role and Political Uncertainty in Lebanon

In Lebanon, the crisis is intensifying both militarily and politically. Hezbollah, a key player in the resistance to Israel, maintains a hard line on the ground. However, speculation is emerging following the assassination of its secretary general, Hassan Nasrallah, and the potential successor within the movement’s hierarchy. Unconfirmed reports from Israeli media even report the possible death of Hashem Safieddine, head of Hezbollah’s executive council, in a recent raid, although these reports remain to be verified.

Internally, the Lebanese government is virtually paralyzed in the face of this escalation. The absence of a president, the unprecedented economic crisis and the paralysis of institutions make it difficult to react to military developments. The humanitarian situation in southern Lebanon, particularly in areas affected by Israeli raids, is catastrophic, with thousands of families displaced and basic infrastructure severely damaged.
